Does their copy engage slippery slope – The copy should suck you in and keep you interested. It should not be boring.
Do they know how to build an avatar – an avatar is who the copy is tailored towards (the person you are marketing towards). Typically copywriters will build an avatar before they write any copy. This process requires a TON of research, as copywriters commonly say – you should know the avatar better than they know themselves. Typically copywriters look for these aspects
The pain the avatar is experiencing.
The desire.
The problem.
Awareness level – How aware your avatar is in regards to the problem / product (Clueless ? problem aware ? solution aware ? product aware ? Most aware)
Sophistication – How sophisticated the market is. Is there lots of competition, is there no competition, etc.
Research – If avatar research primarily comes from Chat gpt it’s a bad sign. They should only use chatgpt as an enhancer not as a primary source of information. A typical good response for avatar research would be, (client information, survey audience, interview audience, find audience on platforms like reddit, youtube, instagram, etc).
Do they know how to write a lead – The lead is the first bit of copy a reader reads, it’s the opener that gets the reader ready to invest their time into a long form Video or Sales letter. Typically the lead does not reveal too much information, it’s just the hook like at the beginning of a video. Leads can range between 100 words to sometimes 1000+ words just depending on how long the copywriter wants it to be.
Experience – They need to have substantial experience, not in terms of time but in terms of portfolio – I want to see lots of completed copywriting projects.
Content – Copy I’m looking for is primarily tailored towards VSLs (virtual sales letters), and SLs (Sales letters) also known as advertorials. The reason I’m looking for this type of copy is because the copywriters writing this content most likely understand – (how to write a lead, how to engage slippery slope, how to build an avatar.)
Lastly please at least skim over these copy examples – it will give you a good idea of who to look for.
