Job Description

I’ve been running my own food-related websites since 2015, and I’m looking for someone who can take on some of the recipe making & photography in order to expand my small roster of sites and take some of the pressure off myself. You must be willing to cook with meats, fish, dairy, and eggs.

Ideally this person will have experience with food photography and a reasonable photography setup at home, as well as a specific time block each week they’re willing to dedicate to food photography (so I know when to expect to receive your work). This will be independent work, done with all of your own equipment, props, backgrounds, lighting, and space.

Right now I’m looking to contract someone to make & photograph approximately 3-5 recipes per week (mostly soups and/or sauces at the moment), with the possibility of expanding into a contracted full-time workload by the end of 2024, or remaining part-time (depending on the hired worker’s availability). If you’ve read this sentence, please use the word “arginine” in your application title.

Here are links to examples of high-quality recipes & food photography from other sites, NONE of them my own: /brioche-french-toast-casserole/ & /no-bake-mini-pumpkin-cheesecakes/ & /recipe/juicy-oven-tri-tip-roast-recipe/ & /snickerdoodle-scones/

***Role & Responsibilities***

For each recipe post you work on, you’ll be required to submit:
–your finalized ingredients list and recipe instructions (noting whether you made any tweaks to the recipe, if provided – any recipe development responsibilities can be negotiated)
–at least two recipe tips that can help readers make the best possible final product (i.e. mistakes you made or almost made, different possible approaches to prep or serving, etc.)
–5-6+ images:
*1 vertical image of all ingredients (unwrapped & measured out into bowls or plates on a plain background, so no brand names, other words or number are visible)
*2+ vertical process images (as many as are needed to completely document each step of the recipe’s preparation; this can vary from 2 to 12+ images)
*2 vertical final product images (either differently-plated, from a noticeably distinct angle, with/without an optional topping, with/without a piece cut out, etc.)
–basic edits done to the photos, if needed (i.e. all photos are publish-ready when submitted to myself or my team)
–basic recipe copy in a Google doc (see examples linked above for an idea of general format; photographer will be provided with a template to follow, and is not expected to submit 100% publish-ready copy)

If capturing video versions of recipes is possible, please indicate this in your application with a note on your setup and experience in food videography. This would be considered an extra, and is not necessary, but would garner higher pay (negotiable).

Expected turnaround for assigned recipe photos is 5 to 7 days, with two weeks’ advance notice if you’ll need to take vacation time in any given week (not necessary for sick days). This will include you sourcing the ingredients, making & photographing each recipe, and writing & sending the requested copy. For my part, I’ll do my best to make sure the recipes’ ingredients overlap at least partially, and work with you to make sure recipes are based on ingredients available at that time of year in your locale.

***Workload & Compensation***

– I’m looking for someone to work an average of 20 hours per week (for $300USD per month; this would be doubled for full-time hours) right now, excluding paid time off (see below).
– I believe it’s important to have structure at work, so I do require a short email at the end of each work day, letting me know very quickly: what you did that day & what problems you ran into that day. I want us to work together to figure out any issues, and the best way to solve them.
– I will train you in any writing software you’ll need to use, and give constructive feedback. I’m open to whatever timing works for you, but I do need you to have a set schedule ahead of time so that I know when to expect your finished work. You’ll need to use Toggl to keep track of your hours.
– After 6 months, in addition to the monthly salary I do pay benefits (3 weeks’ paid leave, 7 days’ sick leave, SSS, and paid Philippine national holidays). Payment is sent on the 1st and 15th of the month.

***To Apply***

I’m familiar with and use AI tools in my everyday work, and they are not acceptable to me in the context of recipe creation – any applicants submitting AI work as their own will be flagged, and their application trashed. I will also spot-check and reverse image search images, so if you know your images were sold to a specific site, make sure it’s indicated as such in your portfolio or application.

A portfolio of work samples – both writing and photography – is required from all applicants and must be attached to or linked within your application for consideration. To apply for this job, please send your resume, portfolio of relevant work samples, and tell me about your food photography experience. If selected, you’ll be contacted on or before March 15th & asked to complete a paid audition (photograph and write basic copy for a recipe) and answer some written interview questions.
