Configure GA4 Goals and Conversions
Introduction:
This document provides a step-by-step guide on how to configure goals and conversions in Google Analytics 4 (GA4). Goals and conversions allow you to track and measure important user actions on your website or app, providing insights into user behavior and helping you evaluate the effectiveness of your marketing efforts. Let’s get started!
Accessing the GA4 Interface:
Ensure that you have administrative access to your GA4 property and have signed in to your Google Analytics account.
Navigating to the Goals and Conversions Section:
3.1. From the GA4 homepage, click on the “Admin” tab located at the bottom left corner of the interface.
3.2. In the “Property” column, click on “Goals” or “Conversions,” depending on the terminology used in your GA4 interface.
Creating a New Goal:
4.1. Click on the “+ New Goal” or “+ Create Conversion Event” button to create a new goal.
4.2. Provide a descriptive name for the goal that represents the desired user action. For example, “Completed Purchase” or “Submitted Contact Form.”
4.3. Choose a goal type based on the action you want to track. The available options may include:
a. Destination: User reaches a specific page, such as a thank-you page or confirmation page.
b. Duration: User spends a certain amount of time on your website or app.
c. Pages/Screens per Session: User views a specific number of pages or screens during a session.
d. Event: User triggers a specific event, such as button clicks, form submissions, or video plays.
e. Smart Goals (for websites only): Goal created automatically by Google Analytics based on machine learning algorithms.
Configuring Goal Details:
5.1. Based on the selected goal type, provide additional details:
a. Destination Goal:
Enter the URL of the destination page.
Choose whether the match type should be an “Equals to” or “Begins with” match.
Optionally, assign a monetary value to the goal if it represents a conversion with a specific monetary worth.
b. Duration Goal:
Set the desired time threshold in hours, minutes, and seconds.
c. Pages/Screens per Session Goal:
Specify the number of pages or screens you want users to view during a session.
d. Event Goal:
Define the event parameters, such as category, action, label, and value, depending on the specific event you want to track.
Goal Funnel (Optional):
6.1. If applicable, you can configure a goal funnel to track the steps users take leading up to the goal completion.
6.2. Specify the URLs or event parameters that define the funnel steps.
6.3. Assign a required order to the steps if necessary.
Goal Value (Optional):
7.1. If your goals have a monetary value associated with them, you can enable goal value.
7.2. Select a value source, which can be static or dynamic.
7.3. If dynamic, define the value based on parameters or calculations within your website or app.
Saving and Testing the Goal:
8.1. Click “Save” or “Create” to save the goal configuration.
8.2. To test the goal, navigate to the relevant pages or trigger the specified events in your website or app.
8.3. In GA4, go to the “Realtime” reports or wait for data to populate in the standard reports to verify if the goal is being tracked correctly.
