A small Australian company is seeking a talented, experienced, and passionate mechatronics/industrial automation engineer to develop small-scale custom CNC, manufacturing, and industrial automation equipment.
This position is remote (work from home), and involves the design and prototyping of a wide variety of small-scale manufacturing equipment and systems, that will be constructed and deployed at our facility in Australia.
You will be expected to design and create physical prototypes of equipment (modules of our manufacturing systems) in your workspace, using a combination of 3d printing and off-the-shelf components (motors, linear rails, aluminium extrusions, sensors, microcontrollers, bearings, etc.). Programming, testing, and debugging of these equipment/components will be within the scope of your responsibilities — consequently, experience with programming microcontrollers is required. Once the developed equipment is complete, you will support (remotely) our local staff who will create and deploy the final version of the equipment into our production line.
Equipment and materials for these prototypes will be provided. Candidates with access to existing tools/equipment (3d printer, oscilloscope, soldering, measurement, power supplies, etc.) would have an advantage when applying, though this is not strictly required. Candidates must have a suitable workspace for storing tools/equipment and the creation and testing of the developed devices (2 desks or part of a room, for example).
We utilize the Rust programming language for our software (including microcontrollers) and Fusion 360 — candidates would be expected to utilize (and learn during work hours, if necessary) these tools.
Overall, the position provides the opportunity for hands-on work on a variety of interesting and challenging projects — and offers an excellent opportunity to further develop and refine your mechatronics, robotics, and software development skills.
— Requirements —
– Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in mechatronics engineering, industrial automation, or a related field
– Minimum 1 years of work experience in industrial automation, CNC equipment design, manufacturing, or similar (more experience is beneficial)
– Experience with the design and development of industrial automation equipment, manufacturing production lines, CNC equipment, consumer electronics, or similar
– Strong CAD skills in Fusion 360, Autodesk Inventor, Solidworks, or similar.
– Experience with typical electronic and mechatronics systems — motors (stepper, servo, BLDC, etc), sensors, actuators, power supplies, etc.
– Microcontroller development experience — STM32, PIC, Atmel, RP2040, etc.
– Software development experience, in Rust, C, C++, Java, or similar languages
– Experience with, or willingness to learn, the Rust programming language (time to learn on the job can be provided if required)
– Experience with software version control systems (GitHub, GitLab, etc.)
– The ability to develop efficient and innovative mechatronics/robotics/software solutions based on high-level technical requirements and company goals
– Good organization skills, including the ability to plan and self-direct work based on task descriptions and requirements
– Good English communication skills — written and spoken
Any of the following would be highly beneficial, though are not requirements:
– Experience with the Rust programming language
– Experience with Fusion 360
– Experience with the design and manufacture of PCBs (schematics, layout, fabrication outsourcing/ordering)
– Experience with 3D printing (FDM, SLA)
– CAM/CNC experience
– Robotics experience
– Development of user interfaces (frontend software development)
– Backend software development experience (databases, web servers, etc.)
– Machine learning (computer vision, etc.) experience
– A portfolio of personal projects related to electronics/mechatronics/robotics/software
– Experience as a team lead or manager
