Job Description:
An ophthalmic scribe works remotely from their personal computer. They receive assigned audio from an ophthalmology office each work day. This audio contains dictated patient encounters. The scribe is expected to listen to the audio and enter the pertinent exam findings, assessment, plan, and follow up information into the electronic medical record (EMR). It is required that the scribe review and understand the application of: the chief complaint, history of present illness (HPI), medical history, vision details, intraocular pressure readings, dilation details, extraocular movement information, testing records, as well as any other patient specific information for each encounter. The scribe will apply this knowledge and use it to summarize the clinically significant information to formulate the assessment and plan of the chart note. Scribes need to understand: how an ophthalmic exam is conducted, what types of instruments are used, ophthalmic vocabulary, and the context of the different medical language used during an exam. It is also important for a scribe to be able to infer what is happening during the audio. For example, there may be common pauses before a certain procedure or a “switch” may be flipped before a certain instrument is used. We need scribes to understand these types of context clues.
There is a vast amount of information that needs to be understood and applied in order to be a successful ophthalmic scribe. We provide in depth paid training, however due to the large scope of ophthalmology and the ever changing medical field, new information will continue to arise. We need people who adapt well to change and learn new information quickly. Questions are how we learn and progress, so without excellent communication skills between our scribes and management, we would not succeed.
Short sample audio will be sent to test scribing knowledge related to Ophthalmology. Hired applicants must be willing to sign an NDA agreement for HIPAA purposes. Thank you and Good luck!
