We’re looking for a NEWS REPORTER. You MUST HAVE successful experience writing news for print, radio, TV or online news service.
Join our team of six journalists who are based in The Philippines, whom we have trained about the local area we cover, including the geography, governments, people and more.
A degree in communications or journalism is only slightly preferred. If you’re the right person for us, you’re eager to focus your professional interests in covering local public meetings (coverage of public councils and committees) and other news and feature stories in our county in the United States.
We are a “hyper-local news organization” located in Washington STATE, on the west coast of the United States. In this position, you would work as one of our newsroom staff.
Please read this entire description before responding.
We’re seeking someone who would want to get to know everything going on in your beats here. At first you would float between several beats, covering them for our other reporters as they go on vacation or take time off for personal reasons. Over time, you would develop deep knowledge about these cities and the county — and some of the personalities around here. You would monitor local websites and observe meetings online, writing stories based on what you see and based on follow-up questions, when appropriate.
We will train the right candidate about where to get the information needed to write stories as well as our particular requirements. Our stylebook is the Associated Press Stylebook.
To get an idea of the kinds of stories we’re talking about, please see the news stories on this page:
Part of your role would be to notify the editor about potential stories that require local in-person engagement, either by adding them to a calendar or by email.
This is a half-time position, 15-25 hours per week. This is NOT a temporary position. The position could expand to full-time for the right candidate.
The Philippines is 16 hours ahead of our time zone. You would typically work your Tuesday (our Monday) through your Saturday (our Friday), on a flexible schedule that suits your other personal interests and obligations. Most of the hours are in the mornings, Philippines time.
Of course, this being a remote position, you would need to have consistent and dependable broadband internet access, and your own dependable computer and smartphone.
If this sounds like something that would be of interest to you, please include the code “JOLT Reporter” in the “Subject:” of your reply.
