Job Description

Dear Filipino experts,

Hello everyone! If you are interested in working in an entrepreneurial digital small business, I would be delighted if you read this advertisement. I am looking for a technical assistant, with a background in programming and/or data analysis, to assist me with various technical and general admin/office tasks.

I work for a New Zealand-based analytics professional services business which currently services a few well established corporations. We are actively seeking to expand our business and work with more clients. Our business handles analytics, reporting, and optimisation/improvement tasks for our clients. For example, we 1) run monthly Excel-based reporting according to existing process documentation, 2) investigate analytical questions which have no existing process documentation (so we have to innovate and build new things), and 3) develop new data pipelines, using programming languages and visualisation tools.

Who I am looking for: a curious, detail-oriented, technical, loyal professional who is eager to learn new things, can follow existing processes meticulously, and likes solving problems. If you like observing and understanding how things work, and if you like building and trying new things, you might be a good fit for this role.

Why I am hiring: we have more work and potential work than we can handle by ourselves. Many tasks are getting repetitive and take a lot of our time. To grow our business we need to delegate many tasks and we need help with both 1) admin tasks like sorting out access to websites/sending emails, and 2) technical tasks like helping us with what we already know how to do well, like processing datasets and building reports and dashboards in Excel, SQL, PowerBI (don’t worry you are not expected to already be an expert in any of these; we are all always still learning!). There are currently a few projects that have a lot of potential but that we are not getting time to work on ourselves because we spend a lot of time on admin & tasks that I have no doubt that the right person will be able to handle even better than we handle them.

Why we (our small company) are in business, other than to make a living: we see SO MUCH inefficiency in our world, and it pains us to witness it. So many companies all around us are doing things so inefficiently, or even just plain wrong. For example, a company will spend a huge amount of money on a project but they do not measure the project’s impact or returns so they do not know if the project was a good idea. So, all that time, money, and effort might have been wasted. That is where we help – because we have the expertise to measure and analyse things, calculate a mathematical answer to a real-world question, and build something that solves their problem without costing too much.

What you would be doing in this role: a variety of admin & technical tasks, ranging from research (like googling and compiling a lot of data from the internet), data analysis (like investigating a new dataset, learning its peculiarities, calculating some KPIs, and summarizing those back to us), reading inbound emails that I receive from our clients (to summarize what the client is asking from us), drafting outbound emails from us to our clients,

Full training will be provided – we will try our best not to ask you to do something that you are not properly equipped and trained to handle. (And if it ever happens, all you have to do is just tell us “I’m not sure there is enough information and/or resources to complete this task properly”!) However, you will be expected to *attempt* to solve the tasks and problems yourself, but there is absolutely no expectation that you will solve them perfectly the first time around – just a good genuine effort and good communication is enough.

English proficiency: You will not be required to talk to clients – so as long as you and I understand each other in English over email, that’s good enough – if you want to talk over the phone/Skype/Zoom as well, no problem. The challenge for when *you* are responding to this particular job application is to provide an answer to the question “What did David Ogilvy say about Claude Hopkins’s book?”. I have included this task in the previous sentence to check how thorough and detail oriented an applicant is – there is no right or wrong answer; don’t spend more than about 2-3 minutes on this and I would just like to see your response whatever it is 🙂

Required skills: you have to be comfortable in Excel, or in a programming language because this position will involve a lot of technical data & process analysis. But your #1 skill will be learning new things quickly. For example, if you already use Excel but don’t know how to create a Pivot table, can you learn how to do that in around 5-10 minutes? Or, if you are already an advanced programmer in one language, can you write a simple script in another language that you’ve never used? Or, if you have to register an account with Miro, Atlassian/Jira, Confluence, Binance, or Xero, spend 15-60 minutes exploring the product and its interface, and then summarize it to me?

Required equipment: a computer with an internet connection is enough. We have a VPN and virtual machines that you can use, so your own computer does not have to be new or powerful at all.

Pay/salary: negotiable, around $700-$900 USD / month full-time; depending on skill, fit, and experience.

How we are different from the big corporations: no corporate BS, at least not from us (our clients may sometimes have some corporate bureaucracy, but it’s our job to handle that so you don’t have to!). No timesheets, no screen monitoring to track every minute of your work, no formal meetings with corporate buzzwords. No dress code. Once hired, *we trust you* and fully support you to do the work that is required. If you are ever unsure of how to do something, or are worried that you’ve made a mistake – we’ve all been there so no worries, you can always ask me and you will never get in trouble for it (the only exception is if you are being deliberately dishonest – which as a small company we cannot afford).

If you have any questions or clarifications please do not hesitate to ask! Because I’m sure I’ve forgotten to talk about some parts of the job that are important to you – so just ask.

Thank you very much for taking your time to read and apply to this advertisement. If we are a good fit, I will reach out to you within 3 business days of your application.

Kind regards,
Ivan
