Hello!
My name is Safwaan and I’m the video editor for Ali Abdaal (4M+ subs). I have a personal YouTube channel with 7.5k subscribers.
I’m hiring a part-time video editor for the personal channel.
I’m looking for someone that has experience with editing YouTube videos. Not a cut-and-trim editor. Someone really talented with an eye for storytelling chops, sound design and aesthetics. After Effects experience is a must. Strong communication skills are a must.
The goal is to scale to 100k subscribers.
Check it out here: /c/Safwaan
This is a part-time role. I want to build a long-term, working relationship with the right candidate. The vision here isn’t just a few months, we’ll work together indefinitely.
To get a rough idea of my editing style:
1. Please study the intros for Alex Hormozi videos. I want you to be comfortable with rotoscoping, fast cuts, posterise time effects, good typography, motion tracking etc.
2. Justin Tse, Shevon Salmon and Andres Vidoza represent the aesthetic I’m inspired by.
3. I have a moodboard here: (/safwaan-mohammed/9cda0d7e41aa4aa295c013b79a6541f3?v=fb6fd3d1872347c189b151292600960a)
Some more details about the role:
I’ll provide you with:
– 4K video footage with audio (sometimes multicam)
– A-roll
– B-roll self-shot
– Epidemic Sound login.
– Any LUTs I use.
– Any plugins I use.
– Any presets.
– for feedback revisions
– Google Drive for sharing footage
What I expect in the finished piece:
– Tight A-roll. Look at the waveform. No umms or ahhs.
– B-roll. It takes time to select the right clips.
– Titles. Understand what beautiful typography and a good drop shadow looks like.
– Transitions
– Rotoscoping & Motion Graphics.
– Keyframes. How to manipulate them as easy ease and the bezier tool for finer control.
– Basic After Effects expressions such as the wiggle or slider control for counting numbers up.
– Zooms and interesting cuts were relevant.
– Pop-up text, images, screen recordings, lower thirds annd icons.
– Music.
– Lots of subtle sound effects
– Up to 2 rounds of feedback. Although I want to get this down to 1 once you understand the style.
Essential editing principles for YouTube which I want you to use:
– Front load your best and most creative editing into the hook (first 30-60 seconds). It’s the sacred period of time where a viewer decides to click off or invest in full-screening the video.
– The 10 second rule. Generally speaking, *something* should be happening on the screen every 10 seconds. Novelty keeps viewers engaged.
– The 30 second rule. B-roll at least every 30 seconds.
– Super tight A-roll edit, i.e. no umms, ahhs or unnecessary pauses at the start and edit of clips.
– Use different types of cuts to keep viewers engaged – I recently started using J-cuts, and I’d love to see soft zooms or zoom cuts in future videos.
– Subtle sound effect overlays add up to create an awesome experience. Use as many as you can to enhance what’s happening on screen.
My preferences for applicants:
– Experience editor for talking head or tech videos on YouTube.
– You know how to use Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects. You won’t always rely on templates. You understand how to use keyframes and basic expressions.
– Can commit to editing 1 YouTube video per week.
– Storytelling + innovative abilities when editing.
– English proficiency.
– You’re good at overcommunicating on deadlines and comments etc.
– Not all videos will be scripted to the word. Often they are bullet point scripts with some high level guidance on B-roll or structure. You must be comfortable with filling in the gaps, using your creativity and best judgement.
If this sounds like you, please respond with…
1. Name of the video editing software you use.
2. Links to 1 or 2 previous videos you’re most proud of. Ideally they’re talking head YouTube videos.
3. Please study the intros for Alex Hormozi’s videos. Are you comfortable with editing to this standard?
4. Link to one of your favourite YT creators.
Look forward to hearing from you!
