Job Description

Start at NYSCEF (New York State Courts Electronic Filing):
/nyscef/HomePage
Go to “Search as Guest”
There may be a Captcha Page. Some Browsers (e.g., Vivaldi, Chrome) allow you to just click “I’m not a robot” and others have you solve a puzzle (e.g., Safari).
/nyscef/NyscefReCaptcha
?
This will bring you to Case Search
?
Go to the tab entitled “Name”
I will want to be able to search by party or by attorney. For now, let’s just stick with attorney.
Later I’ll give an a list of attorneys or parties, but to begin with let’s focus on one attorney:
Jason Gang
Note you can limit the days on which this search is performed under “Narrow Your Results.”
?
Since I am going to want to track Jason Gang cases as they are filed, we can limit it to the last day or two days. (However, with other attorneys I’ll want to track all their cases and they may appear on a case that was filed 4 months ago, so I won’t always want to limit to just a few days but may limit it to the last four months, six months or two years, etc. These lawyers appear in cases as litigation counsel (e.g., Steve Wells), so they often won’t be the lawyer who appears when filing the case.)
Once you search for “Jason Gang,” the website will sort by Claim/Index # and then by County. Unassigned Cases will be listed first.
?
But we will want to sort by date filed with “newest” first. This will just sort it by the date the Summons and Complaint was filed on NYSEF:
?
If you click on the link, it brings you to the case:
?
All cases start with a Summons & Complaint (or sometimes a Summons with a Notice)
The exhibits attached and the affidavits after that initial document is filed vary. For example, this case only has a Summons with Complaint:
?
But here is a case with other documents in addition to the Summons and Complaint:
/nyscef/DocumentList?docketId=h164VBxuPDXdNjSzLcakOw==&display=all&courtType=Kings County Supreme Court&resultsPageNum=1
?
Or another example:
/nyscef/DocumentList?docketId=hQqdRsPNAdIWnWQNqysFyw==&display=all&courtType=Monroe County Supreme Court&resultsPageNum=1
Notice the page also has a second tab labelled “Case Details” which has two pieces of information: (1) all the parties in the lawsuit, and (2) the lawyer. In the beginning, when a case is filed only the plaintiff (i.e., “Plaintiffs/Petitioners”) will have a lawyer. And because we ran this search we know that attorney will be Jason Gang.
More helpful for us is that it list all the Defendants:
/nyscef/CaseDetails?docketId=hQqdRsPNAdIWnWQNqysFyw==
?
That’s the overview. Here is the data I want to gather from these pages to put into an CSV and XLS file formats (i.e., an “excel” spread sheet).
Attorney who filed (or search term)
Date that Summons was filed
Court filed in (i.e., County)
Index #
Plaintiff (put into initial cap format)
Defendants (listed individually in initial cap format)
Blank spot for address (this is pulled from the summons or complaint)
? A big panel where anyone can input the address xand then it gets put into the CSV sheet would be awesome. Similar request is for all blank spots below
Blank spot for email (this is inputted manually)
Blank spot for claims asserted (this is from the complaint)
Blank spot for judgment sought
Last spot is for link to individual case:
Example:
/nyscef/DocumentList?docketId=aw02FFLu3iwKoo3Ul4JJFw==&display=all&courtType=Monroe County Supreme Court&resultsPageNum=1
Last thing I want is a way to pull up all or some of the weblinks all at once.
